MEC UK scoops gold at APG Creative Strategy Awards

London, 13 October: MEC UK won gold at APG’s Creative Strategy Awards last night for its ‘Sugar Smart’ app for the Department of Health’s Change4Life initiative. 

Planned by Pete Buckley and Richard Bartlett, the objective of the campaign was to reduce the amount of sugar that children consume. In a world-first for public health marketing, it focused its core messaging in a phone app for parents. Strategy was central to the initiative, with MEC having identified the importance of visualising sugar and making it personal. 

Earlier this year MEC was also awarded a D&AD award for this work. Its research had shown that parents often don’t realise how sugary some foods and drinks are, and that they now spend more time with their mobile phone than any other media.

The app visualised the sugar with a simple barcode scan by using data from a bespoke comprehensive database of over 130,000 food and drink products. It helped over two million parents take action on sugar, and was propelled to the top of the free app download charts across launch week on iOS and Android. What’s more, an incredible 81% of parents who used the app stated they had reduced the sugar their children consume.

The APG awards recognise great planning and strategy. It’s a celebration of campaigns which demonstrate new approaches, unlock fresh insight, and persuade and inspire, thereby delivering results. 

MEC UK was presented its gold trophy at a dinner and ceremony which took place last night at the stunning St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London.
